Penumbra: Overture is a first-person adventure, survival horror, shooter video game and the first in the series developed by Frictional Games. The game was first release for Windows on March 30, 2007, Linux on May 25, 2007 and for Mac OS X on January 10, 2008. Penumbra: Overture was originally intended as the first episode of a trilogy. With the announcement of the second episode, Penumbra: Black Plague, stating that the second game will be the last chapter. However, the expansion has been released since then: Penumbra: Requiem, technically giving the third chapter series.

Penumbra: Overture combines species survival horror, first-person shooter and adventure. Using the Newton Game Dynamics emphasizes physics based puzzle and physics-based combat. The game also takes advantage of advanced artificial intelligence to respond realistically to noise and light, creating stealth-based gameplay. There are no weapons in the game, so that during the battle, the player is limited to improvised melee with a hammer or pickaxe, or throwing objects at attacking creatures. The game is designed to emphasize stealth and avoidance over direct confrontation. For example, Philip can close the doors behind him to temporarily hold off attacking enemies.
